Pinch History |
| |
T.J. Mulligan's Pinch is located in the historic Pinch district of downtown Memphis. This was the first commercial district in Memphis. The name "Pinch" is traced to Irish settlers who fled the great potato famine in the mid-1800's. Their "pinch-gut" appearance promoted this slang description which became synonymous with the area. The Pinch transformed into a merchant and business community in the 1890's.
Our store is located at 362 N. Main. The building was built in 1884 by the J. T. Franks family. The building was a furniture and casket company, and the family lived on the second floor. The second floor was lost to a fire in the early 1900's. T.J. Mulligan's restored the building to its original condition. The walls are 3 layers of brick, the floors are made from Southern Pine, the ceilings are made of tin, and the columns and beams are 12 inch square, solid Southern Red Oak.
Our bar is called the Linclon Bar. It was named the Linclon Bar because it was said that President Linclon, while traveling across country, was served a beer at this bar. This bar was American-made by Brunswick in the mid-1800's. It was built for a hotel near the rail line in Ohio.
Most of our tables are antique oak pub tables imported from England and Ireland. They have been refinished by T.J. Mulligan's.
We have many unique artifacts in our location, one of the most popular being Ms. Mulligan. Ms. Mulligan is an original oil painting, by an unknown artist, which was salvaged from an English pub. All of our artifacts were located by the owners, their friends, and family.
May we invite all of you to step inside, take an idle moment, and lift a mug with T. J. Mulligan.
